For parents sometimes the most common question is, “what can I do?”, and we answer, “talk with your kids”. Youth whose parents and guardians talk with them about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are 50% less likely to use those substances.

Tips for talking with your teen about substance use

  1. Keep an open mind and have an open dialogue with your youth

  2. Put yourself in their shoes and understand that peer pressure today is a lot different than when you were their age

  3. Be positive and non-judgmental. Refrain from “talking at” your youth and focus on “talking to” your youth.
